EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR EVACUATIONS OF ANIMALS IN THE INDIAN VALLEY AREA

The value of early “Fire Weather” warnings is enormous – be ready.

Your plans should be confirmed, and you should know what your plan is.

Be ready before conditions are dangerous and the challenges are overwhelming.

Start by Staying Informed

  • Consider a NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Admin) hand crank radio for weather alerts and charging your phone.
  • Be in Contact with your Block Captain (Contact Tom Tharsing if you do not know your block captain 415-465-9849 or tomontanglewood@gmail.com)
  • Designate out-of-area contacts to use if local services are disabled.
  • Keep your weather radios charged and your radio tuned to local news. 740am and 88.5 FM including your car.
  • Sign up for local emergency alerts, including alerts for your Evacuation destination(s) alertmarin.org)
  • Follow local Fire, Sheriff, and other official resources on social media and Twitter.
  • Know where you are going before Evacuation Warnings orders occur.
  • Update ALL your GO-Bags for Covid or other infectious diseases you might encounter with masks, sanitizer, wipes, liquid soap, disinfectant cleaner, paper towels, toilet paper, and water.

Local Resources and Information

Large Animal Evacuation

Don’t wait! There is no sight in Marin designated for evacuation of large animals.  Before emergencies occur, research private properties that might house your large animals. Otherwise go to Sonoma County Fairgrounds, a designated sight.

  • Have transportation lined up and know where you are going.
  • Have extra halters, lead ropes, buckets, water & feed.
  • Know all possible escape routes.
  • Have multiple resources who can get your animals if you are not there.
  • Ensure all animals are microchipped – all animals must have ID attached to them.
  • Have photo ID and video of your animals.

Make multiple sets of ID, health, and insurance documents and keep in safe, waterproof containers or a zip lock bag to keep with animals.

Short Notice Horse Hauling:

  • Theresa Simmons (6 horse trailer) (707) 303-6263
  • Hansen’s Horse Hauling (415) 233-1478
  • Alicia Robinson Horse Hauling (707) 292-5153

Small Animal Evacuation

  • Make sure all pets are microchipped and/or have ID on them.
  • Take enough pet food for 3-5 days, pet medications, harnesses, leashes, toys, bedding, grooming supplies, pet-safe cleaner for carriers, poop bags, pee pads, and water & bowl.
  • Make sure your pets are secured in the car – anxious pets may jump through an open window.
  • Place “PET INSIDE” sign if pet is in your car. If you must evacuate without your pet put a sign on your front door!
  • You may have to go through a drive-up COVID screen before entering a shelter or evacuation center. Your pets could get out of their temporary home and will be in unfamiliar territory.
  • Take to animal shelter if open (Marin Humane Society).
  • If you are at an Evacuation Center, you may not be allowed out of your car – have supplies to keep pets comfortable and safely contained in the car.
  • You may be staying in a motel, campground or apartment complex where your pets will need crates, kennel cages, litter & litter box, pee pads.

Sheltering in Place – Safety and survival:

  • Consider every occurrence that might impact you and your equines (Including extended power outages).
  • Identify “safe places” at home or nearby.
  • Ensure you have all the supplies you need for you and your animals to stay healthy if you are without power or help for at least 7-10 days?
  • Contact your local fire and/or Sheriff department and tell them you are sheltered on your property, including the animals.
  • Consider potential hazards?  (Fuel tanks, chemicals, dangerous trees, unsafe electrical connections, old septic tanks or wells).
  • If you must leave your horse or other large animals, TURN THEM LOOSE, then CLOSE THE GATE OR FENCING so they do not return to their enclosure/home.
